Governor Susana Martinez Announces
505 Southwestern New Mexico True Scholar

May 8, 2018

(Mescalero, N.M.) – Today, Governor Susana Martinez announced the inaugural scholarship recipient of the 505 Southwestern New Mexico True Scholars program. The scholarship aims to recognize passion for the future of agriculture in New Mexico, and is being awarded to Bloomfield High School senior Sunshine Tso.

“I’m thrilled that 505 Southwestern came to us with this opportunity to partner, and that today we’re able to award Sunshine a $5,000 scholarship to help her achieve her dream of obtaining a degree in Agricultural and Community Development at New Mexico State University,” Governor Martinez said.

Tso resides near the border of the Navajo Nation and near one the largest farms on the Navajo Nation, Navajo Agricultural Products Industry. Over the years, she has been involved in a variety of youth agriculture programs including Future Farmers of America, 4-H and the Intertribal Agriculture Council.

“Sunshine exemplifies so much of what it means to be New Mexico True, and I’m so happy that we can play a small part in empowering her in this next chapter of her life,” Tourism Department Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Latham said.

The 505 Southwestern New Mexico True Scholars scholarship program, a partnership between Flagship Food Group’s 505 Southwestern brand and New Mexico True, will award $5,000 to one New Mexico high school senior each year.

“Here at Flagship, the dire importance of the agricultural industry is not lost on us. Our business relies on the unique green chile of New Mexico, and this allows us to help foster the next generation of farmers and entrepreneurs in New Mexico,” Rob Holland, Chief Executive Officer at Flagship Food Group said.

Applicants must be graduating seniors of a New Mexico high school, plan to attend an accredited college or university in New Mexico full time beginning the following fall, and demonstrate a commitment to making an impact in the agricultural industry or overall economy of food and agriculture of New Mexico. The application for the 2019 scholarship opens in September 2018. Full eligibility requirements and the application may be found online at NewMexico.org/505TrueScholars.
